More than a few months ago, I searched online for a good, high quality Pathfinder character sheet for the people I gamed with in Northern Virginia. It needed to be pretty detailed, easy to use, and have fields for even the most outlandish of characters.
Enter the PFRPG character sheet by Neceros.
I grabbed the latest version (beta 1.0.3) and decided to run with it. I broke out Adobe Acrobat 8.0 on my Mac Pro and decided to flesh it out with about 2.7 million forms and about half as many JavaScript formulas.
The overall product was pretty good if I do say so myself.
I browsed Neceros’ website and found an update to the character sheet now that PFRPG had gone official (I’m late, I know). Normally, I expected a few minor alterations and everything would work out for the better–until I saw the new one.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the layout quite a bit. The only thing that makes me cringe is that I’d have to start all over again from the beginning. It’s a daunting task due to the fact that there are so many forms that have to be created, especially in the “Skills” section and the formulas that have to be spread out across the entire sheet.
In short: it’s an extreme pain in the ass.
So, over the weekend, I’ve started fleshing out the new version (1.1.0).
I started with Acrobat Professional 8 on my Mac Pro, but for some odd reason, it was so slow that it was not useable. Every form took ~0.5 seconds to redraw on the screen which, multiplied over hundreds of forms, meant it would take an eternity.
My second attempt moved over to an old copy of Acrobat Professional 7 on my Windows machine. It was snappy, and everything worked perfectly. However, not everything was well in Windows-land.
I was done with the first page (skills included) until Acrobat decided to hang during a save, corrupting the save file and everything on the first page. I had backed up the save file about 1/3 of the way into the skills, but it is definitely a kick in the teeth.
As for when the fleshed out version of Neceros’ PFRPG Character Sheet? Should be before the end of the week.
And, as always, thanks to Neceros for putting out a great character sheet.
