MeGUI: The Prequel

Filed in guide , hdtv , technology , windows 0 comments

Well, I have finally got everything that I needed up and running and now have some time to work on the walkthroughs that I promised near the beginning of the year.

From the statistics I’ve seen, there are more than a few people interested in MeGUI and a decent walkthrough that will get you what you want.  As a warning though: it’s not the easiest program* to master, but when used correctly it can create a very high quality encode…

The programs I use from start to finish are:

Now, for a breakdown of what MeGUI is (from the website):

MeGUI is the most comprehensive GUI based ISO MPEG-4 solution.

Input: AviSynth scripts (AVS), AVI, D2V, VOB/TS/MPG/PVA
Output: MP4, MKV, AVI

Video Codecs: x264, XviD, Libavcodec MPEG-4, Snow
Audio Codecs: AAC (Nero, Faac), MP3

Now, for what it’s worth, you can do a touch more depending on how you set up MeGUI.  Me personally, I only let MeGUI handle the demuxing and video encoding portions of the process.  I use BeLight/BeSweet to handle audio (you may insert your own audio encoding program here) and I am a personal fan of the Matroska container format.

Also, depending on what you’re preferences are, there is VobSub/SubRip/AegisSub for subtitles, ChapterXtractor for extracting chapter information, and for the Matroska container format, mkvtoolnix.

This guide will take a widescreen-formatted TV episode from a DVD and turn it into a 720×480 resolution .MKV file using the HE-AAC audio codec and the H.264 video codec along with an intro set of subtitles.  I won’t get into adding ripped subtitles from DVDs, but it’s not too hard to find out how to do that through Google.

The final display resolution for the file will be 853 pixels high by 480 pixels wide which will yield the final display format of 16:9.  The overall goal is to keep the final size around 350MB while keeping the video in the “really good” quality rating.

It should be out in the next week so stay tuned.
